Code Noir Album Review – Jazzwise UK

By Peter Quinn, Jazzwise UK June issue

Four Stars (out of 4) Any new album by Carmen Lundy is a cause for celebration and, delivering a heady mix of jazz, blues, samba and pop, Code Noir is no exception. 9 out of 10 stars

Carmen Lundy is a singer/songwriter, actress, and academic. She’s won considerable critical accolades and has long since established herself as one of the best jazz vocalists working in the second half of the 20th century and beyond. Despite this, however, she still creates and pushes on with all of the zest and need for self expression of a young performer.

Musicians as diversely gifted as Carmen Lundy, who has excelled as a vocalist, composer, lyricist, arranger, guitarist and keyboardist for more than three decades, remain few and far between. There was Ray Charles, and there is Joni Mitchell, but very few others. And Lundy, like Mitchell, is also a superb painter, often crafting the artwork for her album covers, including the multihued self-portrait that adorns Code Noir.
